On August 7, 2020, Icom announced the release of the new ID-52A/E VHF/UHF dual-band digital transceiver with D-STAR support (Digital Smart Technologies for Amateur Radio).
The ID-52 features a 2.3-inch color display (the previous ID-51 had a 1.7-inch display) using transflective technology for excellent visibility even in bright sunlight.
The transceiver includes Bluetooth® as standard. Using the Picture Utility ST-4001A / ST-4001I software and RS-MS1A remote control software, it can connect wirelessly to Android™ devices. The optional VS-3 Bluetooth® headset is also available for hands-free operation.
Compared to the ID-51, the following improvements have been made:
- Simultaneous reception in V/V, U/U, V/U and DV/DV.
- Airband reception has been extended to UHF (from 225 to 374.995 MHz).
- Charging capability via micro-USB connector.
- Significantly increased audio output (from 400 mW to 750 mW).
- D-STAR mode allows sending, receiving and displaying photos stored on a microSD card using only the ID-52.
In addition to the features highlighted above, the ID-52 includes many other interesting functions such as easy DR mode setup, an integrated GPS receiver, a microSD card slot, IPX7 waterproof construction (immersion in fresh water at 1 m depth for 30 minutes), and terminal/access point mode.
The ID-52 is designed to satisfy both beginners and advanced users, also thanks to its complete D-STAR feature set.
It is also worth noting that you can continue using your ID-51 accessories, such as batteries and microphones.
